July 2025

A Focus on Partnerships

July 2025 was a month of sustainability leadership, international defence success and inspiring engagement with the next generation of engineers. Leonardo strengthened its commitment to decarbonisation, secured a major European contract for advanced protection systems and showcased innovation at one of the world’s largest military airshows.

To kickstart the month, Leonardo became the latest member of JOSCAR Zero – the Hellios collaborative carbon reduction platform for the defence sector – reinforcing our ambition to engage suppliers in meaningful climate action. Later in the month, we hosted our UK Supplier Sustainability Workshop at the Royal Aeronautical Society in London. Over 50 participants joined discussions on (Environmental Social Governance (ESG) reporting, risk management and practical steps to reduce emissions. Highlights included updates on key projects such as a 45-acre solar farm in Yeovil, helicopter rotor blade recycling with Uplift360 and zero-emissions refurbishment in Edinburgh.

Our Miysis Directed Infrared Countermeasures (DIRCM) system was selected to protect the German Air Force’s C-130J fleet. Proven 100% effective in NATO trials, Miysis delivers continuous 360° protection against infrared missile threats, ensuring mission safety in contested environments.

At IDEF 2025, a Memorandum of Understanding was also signed between the UK and Turkey on a Typhoon deal, with Leonardo confirmed as a key supplier of electronic warfare capabilities for the aircraft.

The Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) takes place each year in July and once again, Leonardo had a strong presence. Aircraft from across Leonardo’s customers were on display including the AW101 of the Portuguese Air Force and the Irish Air Corp AW139. In addition to hosting many of our customers and VIPs from around the world, Leonardo STEM ambassadors in the event Techno Zone engaged thousands of visitors with interactive displays and engineering-based activities. Their experiences and those of our Team Tempest partners we captured in a live recording of the Future Horizons podcast. VIP guests included astronaut Tim Peake and the Chief of the Air Staff who learned more about our advanced sensors as our young engineers demonstrated our capabilities on the GCAP interactive table.
