Leonardo achieved a major milestone in August with the successful launch of the METOP-SG weather satellite which was equipped with our Southampton-built advanced sensor technology designed to transform global forecasting and climate research. This achievement was later celebrated in September with an event recognising the teams behind the success and highlighting Leonardo’s growing presence in the space sector.
We also shared news of the summer’s Rampaging Chariots robotics tournament, which ignited STEM passion across our UK sites by offering hundreds of students hands-on experience in design, electronics and teamwork. The event continues to inspire future engineers and showcase the exciting careers and opportunities within STEM.
Our STEM summer did not end there. Leonardo teams engaged with young innovators at the National Air & Space Camp Industry Day, sharing insights into aerospace careers and demonstrating the technology shaping the future of UK defence. Similarly, at RIAT’s Techno Zone and the Corporate STEM Hangar at RAF Cosford, visitors explored aeronautics and aviation science, with Leonardo experts sparking curiosity among aspiring engineers and pilots.
Across the air shows attended by our STEM teams, the skies were filled with spectacular displays from the Typhoon Display Team, the Royal Navy Black Cats and the Army Air Corps Display Teams, showcasing the capability of the Eurofighter Typhoon and the AW159 Wildcat. Leonardo was once again very proud to sponsor all three teams this season.
Also in August, our Ethnicity Inclusion Network celebrated South Asian Heritage Month under the theme ‘Roots to Routes’. Colleagues across our UK sites hosted sessions featuring cuisine, quizzes and storytelling, creating opportunities to share personal journeys and strengthen cultural connections.
