Talent Shines in the Leonardo Apprentice of the Year Awards

02 April 2026

Exciting talent emerging from Leonardo’s growing apprentice population has been recognised at this year’s UK Electronics and Cyber Apprentice of the Year Awards, after judges in London earlier this month heard from the regional winners about the positive impact they have been making across the business.

From supporting major engineering programmes to introducing new approaches within their teams, apprentices have continued to demonstrate initiative, creativity and a strong commitment to their development. Their contributions reflect the energy and innovation that early careers professionals bring to Leonardo’s UK business each year.

The full list of winners at the Leonardo Apprentice of the Year Awards 2025 are:

  • Peter Metcalfe – Apprentice of the Year
  • Erin Douglas – Business Apprentice of the Year
  • Chloe French – Manufacturing and Operations Apprentice of the Year
  • Thomas Wesson – Degree Level Engineering Apprentice of the Year
  • Harry Spinner – Contribution to STEM
  • Peter Metcalfe – Biggest Achievement

These national awards were presented to apprentices who had previously been regional winners from across Leonardo’s Electronics and Cyber business sites. The presentations of all regional winners were of an extremely high standard, demonstrating the dedication and professionalism of the apprentices taking part. Judges noted the strong level of preparation, the clarity of the work shared and the enthusiasm of each finalist.

As part of the day in London, the finalists also had the opportunity to meet Leonardo UK Chair and CEO Clive Higgins, for an open question and answer session. Meeting apprentices remains important to Clive, who began his own career as an apprentice, and the session provided valuable insights into leadership, career development and the future direction of the business.

On receiving his award for Biggest Achievement and Apprentice of the Year, Peter Metcalfe said:

“Thank you so much! I’m incredibly proud to receive these awards. They reflect the hard work and commitment I’ve put into my apprenticeship, and I’m honoured that my contribution has been recognised. This achievement is great motivation and a powerful incentive to continue developing my skills and making a positive impact within the business.”

Business Apprentice of the Year, Erin Douglas, added: ”Competing in the apprentice of the year competition has been a fantastic opportunity for me to reflect on all the work I have done over the past four years. The competition is a great reminder to be proud of everything we have achieved in the programme. It was also great to have time with Clive and get his advice on our own careers and future!”

Leonardo currently has over 200 apprentices undertaking programmes across its nine UK sites, with opportunities spanning engineering, cyber, manufacturing, business support and programme management. These apprentices form a vital part of the company’s early careers workforce, bringing fresh perspectives, new skills and a passion for developing the technologies of the future.
