Eleanor, who is studying Aeronautics and Astronautics at the University of Southampton returned to Leonardo this summer following a successful placement in 2022. Reflecting on this year’s placement, she said, “I've loved coming back for my second summer placement, working with other students from different universities on a project I didn't even know existed. I've used modelling methods I hadn't come across before, and feel like I've really contributed to the business.”
Annabel, who has just completed the first year of her Engineering degree at the University of Cambridge, commented, “This placement has given me a great insight into so many different engineering disciplines that I previously hadn't had any experience with. It has really opened my eyes to the opportunities within Leonardo and the wider industry, and I'm excited to work in the field in the future.”
Harry, a Physics and Mathematics student at Durham University, added, “My summer with Leonardo has been more than just an internship; it's a transformative experience where vertical communication lifts ideas, teamwork fortifies resolve, and expert mentors ignite curiosity in the wider business and provide guidance throughout the learning process.”
Srija, currently studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Manchester, said, “This placement gave me the opportunity to really take charge of my own learning, and the nature of the Leonardo work stream meant that we, as summer placement students, could experience the entire process of an engineering development cycle in just nine weeks. This contributed to our understanding of engineering principles as well as the company as a whole. I felt that my work was useful and appreciated, and I can’t wait to be back!”
Jason Cowell, VP Integrated Mission Solutions at our Luton site, congratulated the team on their hard work over the past two months, remarking, “I’ve been blown away with the exciting project developments from the summer placements who spent time with us here in Luton this year. Leonardo provides students with a great opportunity to work as a multi-disciplined engineering group on exciting new technologies in Electronic Warfare and I’m delighted that everyone has used their experience with us to develop skills for graduate positions in the future.”
Ryan Forrester, Systems Engineer at our Luton site, helped lead the students during their time at Leonardo, and oversaw their projects. He commented, “The summer placement programme is designed to rapidly prepare our students for a potential career at Leonardo or in the wider industry, while providing them with an opportunity to work on a project that adds real business value. What they have achieved over the past nine weeks is a testament to themselves and the support network that we’ve put in place to create a successful programme. We wish the students every success as they finish their studies.”
