Apprentices support NATO visit to Lincoln site

31 January 2018

In late January 2018, Leonardo hosted an important NATO Electronic Warfare (EW) Symposium on behalf of UK MoD, at which a group of Luton-based apprentices played a positive role.

Attendees gained a dynamic overview of Leonardo’s EW product range which provided a useful insight of how our heritage and investment has created a broad range of EW product offerings. There were presentations by Head of Integrated EW and RF Cyber Sales, PJ Wallace, Programme Manager, Paul Moss, and Chief Engineer Harry Leyland, who provided a special focus on Leonardo’s EW Training Academy and announced plans for future growth at the Lincoln site.

An additional benefit was the involvements of Luton apprentices Alex Downing, Reece Draper and Ayman Choudhery, who acted as company ambassadors, providing practical support throughout the event, booking visitors, guiding them to meeting rooms and responding to various enquiries.

The apprentices also received daily briefings from Lincoln colleagues, to deepen their understanding of the business, and to show appreciation for their contribution to this important event.

Paul Moss explained: "We wanted the apprentices to benefit from this experience and we set out to explain how the mission data programming and broad range of EW training activities undertaken at Lincoln provide real mission advantage to our customers. PJ Wallace was key to putting this into context, by drawing on his RAF experience and explaining the importance of how programmed data informs the pilot's decision making process in a live theatre of operations.

"The apprentices all seemed really motivated when they finished the week and they have already approached me regarding the possibility of pursuing a placement at the Lincoln site. I'm delighted that the experience has informed their future career choices in such a positive way and we will now be exploring how we can incorporate placements into future training activities as part of our academy growth plan."

Gail May, Luton Apprentice Training Officer added: "The Luton apprentices approached their roles with great professionalism. It was important that our NATO visitors were left with a positive impression of our organisation and they played a key role in achieving this goal."
