Later this month, the team will be taking on a five-day walking challenge between 4 and 8 August to walk 140 miles from Abbey Wood in Bristol to Leonardo’s Luton site to raise funds for Cancer Research UK – the chosen charity of those working at the Luton site. The group is comprised of ex-service personnel: Phil Fraser, Leonardo Technical Liaison, Chris Thornton, Embedded Project Manager, Martyn O’Brien, Typhoon DASS Manager and Jeremy Porter, Embedded Project Manager.
The team’s testing trek forms part of the company’s employee-led Fit For the Future (FFF) Walking Challenge, an internal UK-wide initiative to get colleagues active over the summer months. This challenge takes place over 10 weeks between 4 July to 18 September and follows on from the company’s global fitness earlier in the year, the Leonardo World Tour.
One of those taking on the challenge, Chris Thornton, explained the team’s motivation: “Cancer Research UK is a cause that many of us are passionate about, as it supports so many families across the UK who are coping with loved ones living with this disease and we want to raise further funds for research. We wanted to focus our fundraising on this charity, as we feel a strong bond with the Luton business. For over two years now, we have been participating in the company’s FFF Walking Challenge and this has meant we have got to know many of our colleagues based at the Luton site. Because we’ve tackled so many walks together, and because we’ve got something like 120 years of military service between us, we know how to get on with each other at close proximity through all weathers!”
