Electronic Support Measures (ESM)
Electronic Support Measures (ESM) sense the RF environment in order to provide an operator with a full tactical picture of the operational environment in which it is active.

Electronic Warfare (EW), of which ESM is a part, describes the use of the electro-magnetic energy to protect platforms and increase the survivability of friendly forces, while denying the use of the electro-magnetic spectrum to an adversary. Recent hostilities highlight the importance of EW in protecting forces from guided missiles in the air, IEDs on the ground and the need to disrupt enemy command and control systems across all domains, whilst providing an understanding of the electronic battlespace.

Leonardo is a world leader in delivering EW solutions that protect forces and provide information, delivering distinct battlefield advantage to commanders and decision makers in the land, sea, air and space domains.

In the air domain, Leonardo’s SAGE is a state-of-the-art ESM system, which uses highly accurate direction-finding digital receiver technology to pinpoint the source of an emission and fully characterise it to deliver a tactical intelligence capability. It features world-class parameter measurement and signal processing technology, to provide crewed and uncrewed platforms with world-leading surveillance technology.

SAGE detects and classifies signals in a 360-degree bubble around the platform, extending to the radar horizon.  The highly sensitive antenna detecs all signal types across a very broad frequency range, constanyl ‘wide open’ across the whole range. Operators can locate the signal with high accuracy over hundreds of miles and examine the key parameters of that signal to understand its impact on the platform. Using our unique knowledge of mission data and sovereign national databases, Leonardo offers training and works with nations to exploit this knowledge in the development of counter measures. As a high accuracy, high sensitivity sensor, SAGE is easily integrated into platform protection systems and provides the key to protecting platforms from RF threats.

SEER is an advanced digital radar warning receiver which is compact, scalable and modular. It is adaptable to emerging threats and can be integrated onto any air fixed wing, rotary wing or UAS platform. With its accurate parameter measurement and world-class signal processing algorithms, Leonardo’s SEER can discriminate individual threat signals and provide an accurate picture to the aircrew at all times, either directly through a cockpit warning system or integrated into a wider platform protection system.

In the land domain, Leonardo’s unique understanding of the Defence Cyber and Electromagnetic Activities (CEMA) Architecture (DCA) allows the company to provide CEMA effects across the battlefield. Recent successes in pioneering CEMA programmes have resulted in Leonardo being leaders in the provision of land CEMA capabilities across the globe.
