What is your current role?

I am a first year Business Modern Apprentice.

What did you study at school? Why did you choose an apprenticeship?

Whilst at school, I took Higher English, Geography, Business Management and Psychology. 

I took a liking to business and knew that it was something that I wanted to pursue; however, I was not keen on the idea of university. This highlighted an apprenticeship as the obvious route for me, as this would allow me to continue my studies whilst gaining a practical understanding of a working business and earning a wage at the same time.

Whilst talking to my Dad about my interest in an apprenticeship route, he told me about the apprenticeship opportunities at Leonardo’s Edinburgh site. This caught my interest and so I looked into Leonardo’s apprenticeship scheme and discovered the Modern Apprenticeship, which would offer me a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Business and rotational placements within the company - ticking all my boxes.

What does a typical week look like?

I work four days per week and attend college each Wednesday. 

Due to me changing placements/departments every three months, my schedule usually differs from week to week and my workday is filled with a variety of activities and projects. I will either complete myself, or shadow a colleague in order to develop my understanding and skills.

I have weekly meetings with my placement manager to discuss my progress, understanding, and development within their department, and most departments have weekly meetings to highlight key objectives and tasks for the week. 

What do you get up to outside of work?

Outside of work, I enjoy both time to myself and with friends. I often read or bake in my spare time as I find these to be great ways to unwind after a busy week. 

What are your aspirations for the future?

I aim to excel within my apprenticeship and apply myself within each placement in order to develop professionally. Throughout the rest of my career with Leonardo, I aspire to progress upwards in the company’s framework; however, I am currently undecided which department of the company I want to specialise in.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship, and why?

I would 100% recommend an apprenticeship to anyone that is considering this route. It offers a great balance of learning and hands on experience, whilst providing a strong start to your career. Due to the vast range of apprenticeships on offer, I believe there really is an apprenticeship to suit everyone.
