What is your current role?
Procurement Graduate Apprentice
What did you study at school?
I studied Maths, English, Business, Physical Education, and History for my Highers.
Why did you choose an apprenticeship?
I had no real desire to go to University after leaving school in 2019; the idea just didn’t really appeal to me. When I left, I didn’t have a clue what I was going to do so I started to apply for jobs. I ended up at Edinburgh-based investment company, Abrdn, for about a year and a half before deciding I wanted to try something different. I saw the apprenticeship opportunities at Leonardo and, after a bit of research, decided it would be a great career move for me.
Though I had no intention to go to university when leaving school, the opportunity to study towards a degree whilst gaining valuable work experience on high profile projects was too good to pass up.
What does a typical week look like?
A working week for me consists of a “3/2 split”: I dedicate Monday-Wednesday to my work responsibilities, including raising purchase orders, engaging with suppliers, and so forth.
My Thursdays and Fridays are reserved for University work, when I study towards my Business Degree at the University of Strathclyde.
What do you get up to outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy my sports. I am a keen footballer and also enjoy a round of golf when I have the time. Though it can be difficult to juggle hobbies with academic and working priorities, thankfully due to Leonardo’s policies promoting work/life balance, I manage to maintain my commitment to football and golf.
What are your aspirations for the future?
My short-term goal is to attain my Bachelor’s Degree come 2025. Beyond that, I wish to remain at Leonardo and continue to hone my Procurement skills.
Would you recommend an apprenticeship, and why?
Apprenticeships at Leonardo offer a fantastic opportunity to gain exposure to a working environment whilst also working towards an academic goal (be it a degree or otherwise). Leonardo apprenticeships give individuals the chance to earn a salary while studying towards their degree
