Radar

Leonardo is the European leader in radar technology, with our Centre of Excellence in Edinburgh building upon a 80-year heritage in this area.

We design and manufacture radars for fire control and surveillance that have been bought by government and military customers around the world. These include the Eurofighter Typhoon primary sensor, the Captor radar, as well as our family of Osprey and Seaspray radars that are exported to countries around the world.

Leonardo is also part of Team Tempest (alongside the RAF Rapid Capability Office, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce and MBDA) which is developing the UK's Future Combat Air System (FCAS) capable of operating in the 2035+ environment. As part of the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), Leonardo will be developing the Sensor and Communications Systems technology for the next generation aircraft.

The Eye of the Typhoon

Leonardo is a Eurofighter Typhoon consortium partner, providing the Royal Air Force with its multi-role combat air capability. We are responsible for delivering over 60% of the aircraft’s on-board avionics including leading the consortia that develop both the Radar and Defensive Aid Sub-System.

Pushing the limits: expanding uses for airborne surveillance AESA radars

Radar technology continues to advance at a rapid pace and the innovation being led by Leonardo is enabling new uses for surveillance radars that were previously not possible.

GCAP – Developing the future of combat air

Leonardo is a founding partner of Team Tempest, alongside the UK MOD, BAE Systems, Rolls Royce and MBDA UK. The team is working at pace to develop the technologies, knowledge, skills and expertise necessary to see a new combat air system go into service in 2035. In 2022, the UK-Japan-Italy Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) was established.

Edinburgh – Award-winning Radar Centre of Excellence

Leonardo’s Edinburgh site specialises in the provision of multi-role surveillance radars and countermeasure systems, and has a rich heritage of innovation. Today it produces world-leading radar technology including CAPTOR for the Typhoon, Osprey for Norway’s all-weather search and rescue helicopters, Seaspray for the US Coast Guard, and the Raven for Saab’s Gripen Fighter aircraft.
