Protection at the highest level

31 October 2022

Following this year's NBAA Business Aviation conference in Orlando, we spoke to Campaign Manager, Andrew Chilton, to hear why he believes that the Miysis Directed Infrared Counter Measure (DIRCM) delivers the ultimate in discrete and discerning self-protection solution for VVIP aircraft.

Why do you need DIRCM on a Head of State aircraft?

Andrew Chilton (AC): Easily acquired infrared (IR) man-portable anti-aircraft missiles (MANPADS) are a persistent and credible asymmetric threat to VVIP and Head of State aircraft, in any location, across the world. They can be easily deployed with disproportionate strategic effect, with the threat being exacerbated by the increase in the activities of rogue states which may seek to use the plausible deniability of an attack to further destabilise and disrupt our way of life.

How does Miysis provide ultimate DIRCM protection?

AC: Miysis DIRCM offers the ‘gold-standard’ in IR MANPAD protection, whilst still allowing freedom of operation across the globe. To that end, Miysis presents the perfect solution, whether for new or existing aircraft operating in civil environments under civil regulations where traditional flare solutions are not practical or even allowed.

Miysis DIRCM’s world-leading Size, Weight and Power (SWaP) and open architecture means that it can be easily retro-fitted to in-service aircraft with minimal effect on existing certified systems, whilst offering a discrete and elegant solution for new aircraft.

Which aircraft are already using Miysis DIRCM?

AC: Miysis DIRCM’s laser-based technology and market-leading SWaP credentials allow for a low risk installation and civil certification pathway, which is already proven on Head of State aircraft such as the Bombardier Global 7500 and multiple Dassault Falcon variants. Miysis can work with a wide range of both UV- and IR-based missile-warning receivers, either in a standalone configuration or integrated as part of a wider integrated defensive aids suite (IDAS) such as Leonardo’s Modular Advanced Platform Protection System (MAPPS).

What experience does Leonardo have developing DIRCM technology?

AC: Recently awarded a Queen’s Award for Innovation, Leonardo in Edinburgh has been manufacturing and delivering DIRCM equipment to customers for over 30 years, with over 3,500 units delivered, mainly protecting US and UK military and government aircraft.

Miysis DIRCM is unparalleled and delivers the quickest, fully synchronised response to simultaneous missile attacks, along with the highest available laser energy, all built into the world’s smallest DIRCM package, making it much easier to fit to any aircraft. It delivers a step change in DIRCM reliability and makes living with DIRCM a natural, cost-effective, through-life choice against IR MANPADs and ensures that personnel are brought home safely.

A focus on Miysis

A Directed Infrared Counter Measure (DIRCM) uses a sophisticated laser to disrupt the incoming IR ‘heat-seeking’ missile’s ability to commence, continue or reacquire tracking on an aircraft’s heat signature. This disruption results in the missile missing the aircraft, ultimately saving the mission and bringing the crew home safe.

Despite a shift in UK operational focus in recent years, the threat from man-portable air defence systems (MANPADS) has not disappeared. We look at how lower airspace is becoming increasingly contested, and why ongoing conflicts and regional instability have increased this threat further.

Campaign Manager, Tom Nash, answers some of the most common questions about how Leonardo’s Miysis Directed Infrared Counter Measure (DIRCM) could become part of an aircraft’s self-protection system.

Thanks to the vast array of knowledge and experience built up at its site in Edinburgh over nearly 80 years, Leonardo’s Centre of Excellence in Scotland is today the fulcrum for development of the world’s most advanced DIRCM systems.

As threats to military aircraft have proliferated and accelerated over time, so has Leonardo’s expertise in developing counter measures that protect fast jets, transport aircraft, helicopters and their crews around the globe. Discover how Leonardo's Miysis DIRCM is already protecting airborne systems for UK and NATO end-users.

What lies beneath the Miysis DIRCM? With a hard-wired commitment to continuous improvement, Leonardo has been producing world-class, life-saving technology, along with the highest levels of customer support, during the past four decades. Learn how the entire team remains motivated, energised and immensely proud of their work.

The Most Advanced Solution for Head-of-State and Government VIP Protection

One of the greatest threats to Head of State/Government VIP aircraft principal passengers and their crews is that posed by Infrared Man Portable Air Defence Systems. Miysis DIRCM provides proven laser-based protection equipment to ensure the safety of VIP passengers.

Electro Optics and InfraRed Technology

Electro Optics and InfraRed Technology

Leonardo’s Electro Optics and InfraRed technologies play a crucial role in providing total situational awareness, targeting and self-protection to armed forces on land, at sea and in the air. This includes being recognised as a global leader in the design and manufacture of advanced, high energy, airborne lasers, accounting for over 60% of the world’s demand.
