Leonardo has a long and distinguished history in providing capabilities and services to all military branches to deliver ‘Joint’ effect. Today, Ministries and Departments of Defence are moving beyond Joint to Multi-Domain Integration (MDI), delivering synchronised and coordinated effect across Air, Land, Maritime, Space, and Cyber & Electromagnetic domains, and integrating with all other Government departments and international allies and partners. This is not only on deployed operations, but daily in this era of constant competition, in which some state actors are operating aggressively below the threshold of armed conflict. Therefore, Leonardo’s capabilities and services are needed every day, not just on deployed operations.
Leonardo has significant expertise to contribute to MDI since most of our products operate across some or all of the domains, delivering Multi-Domain Capability. Our airborne radars operate in the air domain, but they can also see contacts in the land and maritime domains. They also operate in the cyber & electromagnetic domain producing MDI effects. We have developed electronic warfare solutions that are applicable across all domains, and our mission data solutions allow platforms and systems to operate across all boundaries.
Leonardo Operational Cloud
Many of these capabilities ‘talk’ to each other through integrated systems. However, Leonardo is now taking this a step further by developing the Leonardo Operational Cloud. This aims to link all our products through open architectures and common standards and protocols, delivering their critical data into a common cloud.
Users will be able to access the information and data within the cloud at the level and relevance they require – soldiers on a battlefield will be able to display data relevant to them, such as UAV video, on their ruggedised tablets; command ships and airborne command systems will be able to share the common operational picture; operational headquarters will be able to see operational level data; and strategic intelligence will be available to higher headquarters. The aim of this will be to accelerate decision-making to secure information advantage over our competitors and then provide winning MDI.
As Leonardo will continue to have a significant place in the provision of Multi-Domain Capability to customers, multi-domain considerations are fundamental to the ongoing development of our products and services, ensuring they have broad utility across all domains.
