I have recently completed a level 3 Technical Apprenticeship with Leonardo UK, where I have had plenty of opportunities to learn whilst gaining experience within the workplace.
For the first year of my apprenticeship, I completed a level 2 engineering qualification at South Essex College where I was able to learn and develop the basic engineering fundamentals such as electrical wiring, electronics and hand fitting. My education continued into my second and third year where I completed a level 3 BTEC engineering qualification on day release. Alongside this, I began 3-month rotational placements within the engineering disciplines including electronics, mechanical, software and systems. From completing these placements, I developed cross-functional skills that would continue to benefit my development as a rounded engineer.
For my fourth and final year, I entered my first choice of final placement, mechanical engineering. I have since gained confidence in my ability to work independently within a project and take responsibility for my work.
STEM Outreach and Awards
Alongside the apprenticeship, I have been able to support STEM and charity events where I have been able to promote careers in engineering. For example, in 2022, I was able to support the Chelmsford Science and Engineering Society (CSES) ‘Fresh Air Fresh Thinking’ project where, as a STEM ambassador, I mentored local primary and secondary schools. We supported the students in creating environmental monitors, using Raspberry Pis connected to testing sensors and equipment. This project is a great example of students getting involved in STEM while also looking at a rapidly expanding real-world problem.
Whilst completing my apprenticeship, I also participated in the IMechE Apprentice Automation Challenge (pictured below). I was the project leader for a team of six tasked with producing a report and working prototype for an automated home/garden device. We were able to produce the “Hydration Station” and we walked away with the Peer Review and Grand Champion Award.
I have also been recognised for my hard work and resilience by receiving two internal Apprentice of the Year Awards, as well as a highly commended award for the national apprenticeship awards.
What’s Next?
Having finished my apprenticeship, I am now working as a Mechanical Technician whilst completing a Mechanical Engineering Degree. My apprenticeship journey has been one I will never forget and I cannot believe the progress and achievements I have had so far in my career. I can’t wait to continue to grow within the business now I have completed my apprenticeship.
Why choose an apprenticeship?
Completing an apprenticeship has provided me with invaluable experience that you wouldn’t be able to gain whilst at college or university. I would recommend this pathway to anyone who is looking to develop their career and network, as you are able to continue your education whilst developing your knowledge in a real-world environment from industry experts. And you get paid for it too!
